After going through the stressful college application process, you’ve finally received your admissions decisions. However, you’ve decided that a particular college you were accepted to is not the right fit for you. Whether your plans have changed or you’ve chosen to attend another school, it’s important to decline the enrollment offer politely and promptly.
Respond Quickly
Once you’ve made your final decision, don’t delay in letting the college know you won’t be attending. Most schools need to know pretty soon after admission offers go out so they can adjust their numbers and open up spots for students on the waitlist. Check the college’s deadline for your final reply and submit your decision before that date.
Send a Formal Letter or Email
Look on the website for the office admissions contact information. Address the letter to the admissions director or representative who notified you of your acceptance.
Be Courteous and Thankful
In your letter/email, express your appreciation for being offered admission to the college. Make it clear you are declining the offer, but do so politely and courteously without going into too many personal details. For example:
“Thank you for offering me admission to State University. I appreciate the time your admissions committee spent reviewing my application. However, after careful consideration, I have pursued other educational opportunities that better fit me.”
Don’t Point Fingers
Even if you didn’t get into your top choice school or didn’t receive enough financial aid, avoid making accusations or voicing disappointment about the college’s decision. Thank them and state that you won’t be attending.
Let the Financial Aid Office Know
If you were offered financial aid or scholarships from the college, send a copy of your decline letter to the financial assistance office. This will allow them to re-allocate that aid to other students.
Follow these tips for gracefully declining admission to maintain a cordial relationship with the college. After all, you never know if your paths may cross again.
